How to Clean and Maintain Your Masterbuilt Vertical Smoker
Keeping your vertical smoker in top shape doesn't just extend its life—it ensures every cook delivers that rich, smoky flavor you expect. Whether you've just wrapped up a weekend brisket session or are prepping for your next backyard BBQ, here's what you need to know to clean and maintain your Masterbuilt meat smoker.
Cleaning and maintaining your grill can keep it lasting for years to come
Steps to Cleaning Your Smoker
Step 1:
Always Let it Cool: Before touching or moving any part of your smoker, make sure it is cool. Vertical smokers retain heat, so it's essential to wait until the internal temperature drops below 115°F to avoid burns and ensure safe handling.
Step 2:
Clear the Ashes: Ash buildup can restrict airflow and impact performance. Once ashes are cold, carefully remove them from the wood chip tray. For safe disposal, wrap the ashes in aluminum foil, soak with water, and discard in a non-combustible container.
Step 3:
Clean the Interior & Trays: Use mild dish soap and warm water to clean the racks, water bowl, drip pan, and rack supports. Some racks are dishwasher safe; you would need to check your smokers manual. Rinse and dry thoroughly before reassembling. For the wood chip tray and loader, remove any ash residue frequently to avoid clogs and flare-ups. Don't use water or cleaners on the control panel or electrical components.

Step 4: Wipe Down the Exterior
A damp cloth is all you need for the outside and interior walls of your smoker (including the glass door if your model features one). You can use a mix of 50/50 water and apple cider vinegar on the interior to remove heavier smoke residue. Put the mixture in a spray bottle and shake well, and scrub with a sponge. Avoid harsh cleaners and always dry everything completely to prevent rust or corrosion.
Step 5: Empty and Inspect the Grease Tray
Grease buildup can lead to flare-ups or odor. Regularly check the grease tray during and after cooking, empty it when needed, and wipe it clean.
Step 6: Store your Smoker Correctly
After cleaning, store your smoker in a dry, covered space. Avoid leaving it exposed to the elements, and inspect periodically for any signs of moisture buildup, rust, or corrosion. We recommend using a vertical smoker cover.
